February Home Care: Tending to Your Surroundings

February is often considered the "bridge" between the stillness of winter and the stirrings of spring. It’s a wonderful time for low-pressure preparation—tending to the small details that ensure your space remains a sanctuary or is in tip-top shape in the Spring. Here is a curated list of home maintenance items perfect for this transitional month:

The Interior Refresh

HVAC Filter Swap: With the furnace working hard, a fresh filter is the easiest way to improve air quality and system efficiency.

The "Safety Check": February is a great time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s a small task that provides immense peace of mind.

Kitchen Detail: Give your range hood filter a quick soak in warm, soapy water to remove winter cooking oils. While you’re there, vacuuming the coils behind or beneath your refrigerator can help it run more efficiently.

Bathroom Check: Inspect the caulk and grout around your sinks and shower. A quick touch-up now can prevent moisture from reaching your walls during the humid months ahead.

Gutter & Roof Glance: On a clear day, do a quick walk-around. Look for debris that might be blocking drainage.

Local Happenings of Note in February

There are many events happening throughout the area, we are hoping you will do your own exploring and research to find what is best for you and your schedule.

Here are a few events of note:

February 1^st | The Special Olympics Delaware Polar Plunge; Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk; is the signature winter event where thousands of "Bears" plunge into the Atlantic Ocean to support athletes with intellectual disabilities. The event features a festival atmosphere with a 5K and sandcastle contest. Price: Free to watch; fundraising minimum to plunge.

February 6^th | Jamaican Me Famous Karaoke Round 3; Seacrets, 117 49th St, Ocean City; continues at the area’s most famous tropical-themed venue. Local and visiting vocalists compete for cash prizes and a spot in the seasonal finals. Price: No cover charge for participants before 9 PM.

February 7^th | 3rd Annual Hot Chocolate Fest; 10AM – 3PM; Cape Henlopen High School, 1250 Kings Highway, Lewes; biggest and best hot chocolate festival yet!!! Grab a hot cup of hot chocolate for $5, includes unlimited toppings at our three big hot chocolate bars!! Over 90 local vendors to do some great pre-spring shopping!!! Marshmallow hunt for a $100 shopping spree!!! Petting zoo, weather permitting!! Photo ops!! Come and enjoy the warm and cozy fun!!Door prizes every 15 minutes!!! Event by Saltwater Roots Boutique.

February 7^th – 8^th | The Reach the Beach All-Star Grand Nationals; Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 4001 Coastal Hwy, Ocean City; Thousands of cheerleaders and dancers come to the coast for a high-energy national competition. This is one of the largest indoor sporting events held in Ocean City during the winter. Ticketed for spectators (varies by day).

February 13^th - 15^th | The Ocean City RV & Van Show; Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 4001 Coastal Hwy, Ocean City; This event features the latest in motorhomes, travel trailers, and van conversions. Experts are on-site to discuss travel trends and outdoor lifestyle equipment for the upcoming season. $10 per person.

February 14^th | Rehoboth-Dewey Chamber Merchants' Attic Indoor Garage Sale; Cape Henlopen High School, 1250 Kings Highway, Lewes; 10AM – 3PM; Plan to shop at the State's Largest Indoor Garage Sale! Vendors will be selling their wares including excess business inventory, antiques, collectibles, and second hand household items. Refreshments will also be sold. There is no admission fee; however donations for the benefit of the Chamber Event Fund are welcome.

February 14^th | The Seaside Bridal Show; Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 4001 Coastal Hwy, Ocean CityA one-stop-shop for couples planning their coastal weddings, featuring local photographers, caterers, florists, and venues. The event includes a fashion show and door prizes. $10 at the door.

February 20^th – 22^nd | The 43rd Annual Seaside Boat Show; Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 4001 Coastal Hwy, Ocean City; This event is known as "The Boat Show that a Church Built," features over 350 boats from 50+ dealers. It includes electronics, engines, and nautical accessories with proceeds benefiting local youth programs. Price: $10 for adults; $1 for children.

February 27^th – March 1^st | The Ocean City Home, Condo, and Outdoor Show; Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 4001 Coastal Hwy, Ocean City; provides inspiration for spring renovations. Vendors offer everything from landscaping and roofing to interior design and smart home technology. $7 for adults; Free for children under 13.

Coming in March

March 5^th - 8^th | 10^thAnnual Ocean City Film Festival; Various venues throughout Ocean City; Showcases new films by regional and international filmmakers of every background and genre. Screenings will be held at venues across Ocean City, alongside filmmaker Q&As, special events, and opening and closing parties throughout the festival. Pricing varies.

The Listening Booth - We’re Listening, is a 501c3 organization that is focused on combating loneliness through the arts, most notably original music, songwriting and storytelling. Recipe of the Month: Oreo Icebox Cake

This no-bake dessert is for cookie lovers! Credit: Leah Perez

Yields: 8-10 servings Prep Time: 30 minutes; Total Time: 4.5 hours

Ingredients

1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, at room temperature

1 cup powdered sugar

1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

3 cups heavy cream, divided

50 chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos, plus more for topping (from a 25.5-oz. package)

3 (6-oz.) containers raspberries, divided

Directions

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese on medium speed until smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla, and beat on low speed until combined, about 30 seconds. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Increase the speed to medium, and beat until smooth, 1 minute more.

Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. Add 1 cup of the heavy cream and beat on low speed until smooth. Add the remaining 2 cups of heavy cream, increase the speed to medium high, and beat until soft peaks form, 1 to 2 minutes.

Spoon ¼ cup of the cream mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch square baking dish, smoothing into a thin, even layer.

Top the cream mixture with a single layer of cookies, breaking some as needed to fit. Spread about 1 1/2 cups of the cream mixture over the cookies, smoothing into an even layer with a spoon or offset spatula. Top with an even layer of raspberries from 2 (6-ounce) containers. Add another 1 1/2 cups of the cream mixture, smoothing into an even layer. Top with a final layer of cookies, then add the remaining cream mixture on top, smoothing into an even layer.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or up to 12 hours.

Decorate the cake as desired with crumbled cookies and the remaining raspberries. Use a serrated knife to slice and serve.
