Welcome to August along the coast, where the summer season is in its absolute stride from the shores of Delaware down to Maryland. As these golden late-summer days unfold across the area, there is no better time to embrace the vibrant energy right outside our doors. Whether you are spending your weekends soaking up the sun on the beach, catching the waves, or simply pausing to enjoy the salty breeze, remember to truly live in the sunshine, and swim the sea.

September 5 | Founders Day Concert: The Jimmy’s | Bethany Beach Bandstand, Bethany Beach, DE; A nostalgic 80s Flashback concert performance. Price: Free.

September 6 | Bethany Beach Independence Day Parade | Downtown, Bethany Beach, DE; The rescheduled parade featuring community floats and groups traveling the traditional downtown route. Price: Free.

September 6 | Labor Day Celebration Fireworks & Drone Show | Bethany Beach, DE; A special culmination of the town's 125th anniversary and Labor Day weekend, including a drone display and fireworks. Price: Free.

September 7 | 41st Annual Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral | Downtown, Bethany Beach, DE; A long-standing local tradition involving a New Orleans-style procession with Dixieland jazz to ceremoniously "bury" the summer season. Price: Free.

Bethany Bandstand Events - Bandstand performances continue through September and October on Friday and Saturday nights.

Freeman Stage - an outdoor performing arts venue located in Selbyville, DE and is home to more than 70 live performances each summer. Including a diverse range of genres like theatre, concerts, dance, comedy, children’s shows and much more.

The Listening Booth - We’re Listening, is a 501c3 organization that is focused on combating loneliness through the arts, most notably original music, songwriting and storytelling. Salted Vines - Events and Live Music Series

Recipe of the Month: Bruschetta

Servings: 9

Total Time: 37 mins | Prep Time: 15 | Cook Time: 7 | Marinating Time: 15

Ingredient

6 Roma tomatoes, 1 1/2 lbs, diced

1/3 cup basil leaves, chopped

5 garlic cloves, divided

1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1/2 tsp sea salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

balsamic glaze, (optional)

For the toasts:

1 baguette

3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1/3 cup shredded parmesan cheese

Directions

Make the Topping

Core and dice tomatoes (or use a food chopper). Drain any excess juice and transfer tomatoes to a medium bowl.

Chop Basil - Stack basil leaves and roll them into a tube. Using a sharp knife, thinly slice the basil into ribbons and transfer to the bowl with tomatoes.

Finely mince 3-5 garlic cloves. Mix 1 tsp of minced garlic into 3 Tbsp olive oil and set aside. Add remaining minced garlic to the mixing bowl with tomatoes.

Season tomatoes with 2 Tbsp olive oil, 1 Tbsp balsamic, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Stir gently to combine and set aside to marinate for 30 minutes.

Make the Bruschetta Toasts:

Preheat oven to 400˚F with a rack in the center of the oven. Place toasts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cut toasts into 1/2” thick slices, slicing diagonally.

Arrange toasts on the prepared baking sheet and brush the garlic infused olive oil on both sides of toasts. Sprinkle tops with parmesan cheese and bake at 400˚F for 5 minutes then broil on high heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

To Serve: Arrange the toasts on a platter and the tomato topping in a separate bowl. Spoon the tomato mixture over the toasts and serve with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze.
